Rio Stone field guide

Color samples, lighting, and wet-versus-dry appearance

Use controlled, labeled comparisons to understand how light, water, dust, finish, surrounding colors, and screen display change material appearance.

Project inspiration; materials shown are not represented as a specific Rio Stone product.

A useful material request starts with a clear measurement, a defined use, and honest expectations about what still needs confirmation.

Control the comparison

Place alternatives on the same neutral background, in the same light, at the same time. Label product, source, lot or date, particle size or finish, and moisture state. Compare more than one handful or piece. Phone cameras adjust white balance, exposure, contrast, and saturation automatically, so retain physical samples and do not treat screen matching as a specification.

Observe light through the day

Morning, midday, late sun, open shade, warm exterior lighting, cool LEDs, and reflected color from walls or plants can change the perceived hue and contrast. Review the sample where it will be installed and from the distance most people will see it. Large fields often read lighter, darker, calmer, or busier than a small sample.

Compare moisture and finish

Rinse dust from a representative portion, then view it dry, damp, and saturated. If a sealer, enhancer, polish, flame finish, or other treatment is proposed, apply the exact approved system to a test area and allow the specified cure. Water-darkened color is not a promise of how a permanent finish will age or perform.

Record the decision without altering hue

Store unedited reference photographs, date, location, weather, light, lot, moisture, and approver together. Cropping and exposure correction may aid documentation, but hue shifts, generative fill, or selective color replacement make a material record unreliable. Identify which sample remains authoritative and how installers should blend or orient the approved range.

Before requesting pricing

  • Compare labeled current-lot samples in the actual project light and at the intended viewing distance.
  • Photograph a neutral scale and color reference, but make final visual decisions from physical material when practical.
  • Test dry, damp, and fully wet states plus any specified sealer or finish on a representative mockup.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the website image differ from my sample?

Lot variation, moisture, dust, lighting, camera processing, compression, and display calibration all contribute. The labeled current material controls.

Is a wet sample equal to sealed stone?

No. A sealer has its own chemistry, sheen, compatibility, application, cure, durability, and maintenance. Test the exact system.

How large should a mockup be?

Large enough to show the relevant color range, joints, pattern, finish, adjacent materials, and viewing distance; project specifications may set a required size.
