Plan by project
Patios and outdoor living
Coordinate use zones, furniture, cooking, fire, shade, drainage, structure, surface, walls, utilities, transitions, and maintenance before choosing finishes.
Before choosing
Turn the idea into useful details.
These are planning prompts, not engineering instructions or an installation guarantee.
- Lay out circulation, seating, dining, cooking, fire, doors, steps, shade, drainage, utilities, and clear working zones at full scale.
- Select the surface and support assembly for load, heat, grease, water, slip, furniture, cleaning, accessibility, and climate.
- Resolve structures, gas, electrical, plumbing, fire clearances, waterproofing, permits, and qualified trades before finish quantities are released.
Program the outdoor rooms
Place full-size furniture and equipment footprints on the plan, including chair pullback, door swings, grill or appliance operation, fire-feature exclusion, paths, serving, storage, shade structures, planters, steps, ramps, and maintenance access. Mark sun, wind, views, reflected heat, irrigation, roof drainage, pool splash, and neighboring impacts. A beautiful material cannot fix an unusable layout.
Resolve structure, utilities, and water
Coordinate subgrade and base, slabs or footings, retaining edges, drains, slope away from structures, waterproofing, wall flashing, utility sleeves, gas, electrical, lighting, plumbing, appliance ventilation, and future service. Fire, cooking, overhead structures, walls, elevated work, and pool-adjacent areas can require permits, code clearances, listed equipment, and qualified design or installation.
Choose and quantify finish systems
Compare pavers, flagstone, slabs, gravel, DG, veneer, wall stone, caps, counters, and decorative media as complete assemblies. Review heat, slip, glare, grease and stain response, freeze or thermal movement, joints, edge profiles, barefoot comfort, furniture stability, and repair. Take off each base, bedding, finish, border, wall face, corner, cap, cut, joint, and transition separately.
Mock up and phase the installation
Build a sample showing pattern, joint, edge, wall, cap, adjacent finish, lighting, and wet or sealed appearance where relevant. Approve current lots and blending. Sequence underground work and structural elements before finishes; protect completed surfaces from later trades. Plan delivery and staging around limited access, lot separation, pallet weights, weather, dust, neighbors, and a safe route for crews and equipment.
Frequently asked questions
Can decorative rock be used beneath a fire feature?
Only when the listed equipment, manufacturer instructions, fuel system, heat exposure, clearances, drainage, and code approve the exact material and assembly.
Should patio slope be decided by the paver installer?
Drainage elevations and outlets should be resolved in the project design before finish installation, with applicable code and accessibility review.
Do I need a mockup for natural stone?
It is strongly useful when color range, joints, pattern, finish, sealing, lighting, or adjacent materials affect acceptance; specifications may require one.
