Driveways and parking areas
Design traffic, geometry, subgrade, base, drainage, surface, edges, utilities, accessibility, maintenance, and construction logistics for the actual vehicles.
Before choosing
Turn the idea into useful details.
These are planning prompts, not engineering instructions or an installation guarantee.
- Record vehicle types, frequency, turning, braking, parked loads, service access, fire access, gates, slopes, and public-road tie-in.
- Obtain a section suited to subgrade, drainage, climate, loads, surface system, and applicable public or accessibility requirements.
- Quantify excavation, stabilization, drainage, base lifts, bedding, surface, edges, markings, transitions, and testing separately.
Define traffic and geometry
Map property line, road connection, gate, garage, parking stalls, turnarounds, backing, delivery and emergency routes, pedestrian crossings, ramps, utilities, drainage, walls, trees, and sight distance. Record passenger, trailer, RV, refuse, delivery, or work vehicles and their loaded frequency. Geometry and pavement section should reflect actual turning and wheel paths, not only total square footage.
Investigate support and drainage
Identify native or fill soil, expansive or weak zones, moisture, pumping, prior trenches, utilities, frost or heat conditions, slopes, roof discharge, adjacent grades, and legal outlet. The design may require undercut, stabilization, separator or reinforcement, compacted aggregate lifts, drainage, curbs, and testing. A decorative top layer cannot compensate for saturated or unprepared subgrade.
Select a traffic-ready surface
Aggregate, DG, pavers, permeable units, concrete, and other systems differ in rutting, migration, dust, joints, heat, drainage, oil staining, snow or sweeping, accessibility, markings, and repair. Confirm product gradation, thickness, edge restraint, bedding, compaction, joint material, and maintenance. Vehicle use or code compliance must not be inferred from a landscape product name.
Phase quantities and quality control
Calculate each designed layer from net area and compacted depth, then use verified loose-to-compacted or density data where conversion is required. Separate drive lanes, stalls, aprons, ramps, edges, drains, utility patches, and transitions. Plan legal deliveries, stable staging, moisture control, lifts, compaction, elevation checks, testing, curing where applicable, traffic exclusion, and final drainage observation before opening.
Frequently asked questions
Is landscape gravel suitable for a driveway?
Not automatically. Gradation, angularity, base, depth, drainage, edge restraint, loads, slope, maintenance, and design determine suitability.
How deep should the base be?
There is no universal answer. Vehicle loading, subgrade, drainage, climate, surface system, code, and qualified design control the section.
Can runoff be directed to the street?
Do not assume it. Confirm lawful discharge, permits, neighboring impacts, water quality, curb connection, and project drainage design.
