Rio Stone field guide
How to measure and order landscape material
Turn field dimensions into a traceable material request while keeping geometric estimates separate from the final quantity Rio confirms.
A useful material request starts with a clear measurement, a defined use, and honest expectations about what still needs confirmation.
Make a measured sketch
Break the project into rectangles, circles, triangles, and clearly marked irregular areas. Measure length and width at more than one point when edges wander, subtract fixed areas that will not receive material, and note which number is uncertain. A dated sketch with feet, inches, and photographs is more useful than one total copied from memory.
Calculate volume without hiding assumptions
For a rectangle, square feet equal length × width. Cubic yards equal square feet × depth in inches ÷ 324. A 20 ft × 10 ft zone at 3 in deep is 200 sq ft and 1.85 yd³ before any allowance. For a circle, use π × radius² for area. Keep each layer and depth separate instead of averaging unlike materials.
Add allowances deliberately
Waste, cuts, compaction, settlement, irregular edges, and future touch-up are different reasons for extra material. Do not combine them into an unexplained percentage. Write each allowance beside the condition that created it, and never convert volume to tons without a verified density for the exact material, moisture condition, and grading being quoted.
Build an order-ready request
List product or material family, preferred variant, calculated amount, desired unit, project ZIP, pickup or delivery, target date, and access constraints. Include the sketch and identify flexible choices. Rio can then confirm current lot, packaging or bulk unit, minimums, practical rounding, availability, payload, and whether another site measurement is needed before an order.
Before requesting pricing
- Sketch every material zone separately, label its shape, and measure in one consistent unit.
- Record finished depth, edges, slopes, obstructions, access, and whether dimensions came from plans or the field.
- Send the unrounded calculation and assumptions; let Rio confirm sale units, practical allowance, and loading details.
Frequently asked questions
Should I round before sending the calculation?
No. Send the unrounded result and show the formula. Rio can apply the confirmed sale increment and discuss a separate, project-appropriate allowance.
Can one depth be used across the whole yard?
Only when the design truly uses one finished depth. Treat base, bedding, surface, planting, and transition zones as separate measured layers.
Is the calculator a final order quantity?
No. It estimates geometry. Product density, compaction, moisture, grading, packaging, site conditions, and installation decisions still require confirmation.
