Plan by project

Drought-tolerant yards

Plan hydrozones, soil, drainage, plants, ground covers, paths, accents, irrigation, establishment, and long-term maintenance as connected systems.

Before choosing

Turn the idea into useful details.

These are planning prompts, not engineering instructions or an installation guarantee.

  • Map sun, reflected heat, wind, slope, drainage, soil, irrigation, roots, utilities, access, and existing plants before selecting finishes.
  • Divide planting hydrozones, decorative cover, paths, drainage, boulders, and service areas into separately measured material zones.
  • Verify mature plant size, establishment water, ground-cover depth, edge details, current-lot appearance, and maintenance access.

Read the microclimates

Mark hours of sun by season, south- and west-facing heat, reflected light from glass or walls, wind tunnels, frost pockets, slopes, ponding, roof runoff, soil texture, existing tree roots, utilities, and irrigation zones. A low-water front yard is not one uniform exposure. Use those observations to place plants and materials where their verified requirements fit.

Build compatible zones

Group plants with similar water, soil, sun, and maintenance needs. Separate decorative rock or mulch, paths, drainage swales, boulder settings, utility access, and fire- or structure-adjacent clearances according to qualified guidance. Preserve root flare, air and water movement, and access to valves. Do not solve irrigation or drainage simply by covering the soil with more material.

Take off each material separately

Calculate net area and depth for each ground-cover zone; measure path layers, edging, drainage, soil amendments, plants, and boulders on their own lines. Square feet × depth in inches ÷ 324 gives geometric cubic yards for a uniform layer. Keep any compaction, settlement, cuts, and irregular-edge allowance identified separately, and convert to weight only with verified density.

Sequence establishment and care

Resolve drainage and utilities before base or planting work, then prepare soil, place irrigation, set structural accents, install plants, and finish ground cover without burying stems or blocking emitters. Plan establishment watering, inspection, weed control, pruning, replenishment, and irrigation adjustment. Review actual materials dry and wet so color does not overshadow heat, movement, or maintenance behavior.

Frequently asked questions

Does drought tolerant mean no irrigation system?

No. Establishment and seasonal needs vary. Design hydrozones and irrigation from verified plant, soil, climate, and site information.

Is rock always better than organic mulch?

No. Heat, soil biology, plant needs, fire guidance, runoff, weeds, maintenance, replenishment, and appearance differ by site and material.

Can one ground-cover depth serve every zone?

Only if particle size, plant needs, slope, containment, drainage, and design truly match. Measure and specify zones separately.
