Drainage and erosion control

Turn observed water and sediment movement into a lawful, maintainable system of grading, conveyance, storage, infiltration, filtration, outlet protection, and vegetation.

Before choosing

Turn the idea into useful details.

These are planning prompts, not engineering instructions or an installation guarantee.

  • Map watershed boundaries, impervious areas, flow paths, ponding, seepage, erosion, sediment, structures, utilities, and downstream conditions.
  • Use qualified analysis for design flow, infiltration, slope stability, pipe, storage, outlet, permits, and impacts where required.
  • Specify each aggregate, filter, geotextile, pipe, inlet, structure, erosion layer, plant, and maintenance access by function.

Diagnose the water budget and path

Observe safe storm events and record rainfall context, roof and paving areas, irrigation, high and low points, ponding duration, concentrated flow, soil saturation, seepage, erosion, sediment deposits, failed drains, and downstream discharge. Mark property boundaries and neighboring grades. A snapshot of one puddle does not reveal peak flow, subsurface water, blocked conveyance, or where redirected water will go.

Select a lawful strategy

The design may preserve natural drainage, correct grade, spread flow, convey it in swales or pipe, infiltrate where soils and setbacks allow, detain it, filter sediment, protect an outlet, or combine methods. Verify permits, easements, stormwater rules, protected areas, utility conflicts, groundwater, soils, and neighboring impacts. Never assume a public drain or adjacent property is an acceptable outlet.

Detail compatible layers and transitions

Drainage aggregate, bedding, filter aggregate, geotextile, pipe, perforations, cleanouts, inlets, catch basins, channel lining, check structures, rip rap, soil protection, seed or plants, and overflow each serve a specific role. Match particle retention and flow across interfaces, key in erosion protection, prevent undermining, and provide stable access. Decorative substitutions require design approval.

Build inspection and maintenance in

Provide accessible inlets, cleanouts, sediment forebays, outlet observation, vegetation access, and a safe overflow route. Establish inspection after installation, during early storms, after major events, and when upstream surfaces change. Remove sediment and debris before capacity is lost; repair scour, settlement, clogging, exposed fabric, displaced stone, failed vegetation, and blocked outlets using the approved system details.

Frequently asked questions

Can a French drain solve every drainage problem?

No. Source, soil, groundwater, grade, pipe, filter, outlet, maintenance, and lawful discharge must match the diagnosed problem.

May water be infiltrated beside a foundation or slope?

Only when qualified design confirms soils, setbacks, groundwater, structure, slope stability, overflow, and applicable rules. Otherwise it can create damage.

Is rip rap sized by appearance?

No. Design flow, velocity, depth, slope, stone density and gradation, layer thickness, filter, toe, transitions, and outlet geometry control sizing.
