Paths and walkways

Design route, width, grade, cross-slope, drainage, accessibility, base, surface, edges, transitions, lighting, and maintenance together.

Before choosing

Turn the idea into useful details.

These are planning prompts, not engineering instructions or an installation guarantee.

  • Survey start and end elevations, desire lines, doors, gates, steps, utilities, roots, drainage, sight lines, and adjacent uses.
  • Choose the complete walking assembly for expected users, traffic, weather, maintenance, and any accessibility requirement.
  • Calculate excavation, base, bedding, surface, edging, joints, drains, steps, landings, and transitions as separate items.

Set the route and elevations

Walk the natural route and mark entrances, destinations, gates, utilities, trees, irrigation, low points, roof runoff, slopes, retaining edges, and places where people already travel. Survey enough elevations to resolve longitudinal grade, cross-slope, drainage, steps, and transitions. Public, commercial, and accessible routes must follow applicable design and code requirements rather than landscape intuition.

Choose a stable surface system

Loose gravel, compacted DG, stepping stones, flagstone, pavers, concrete units, and permeable assemblies differ in movement, texture, joints, heat, drainage, rolling resistance, edge needs, and repair. Match the material to wheelchairs, strollers, carts, bare feet, pets, maintenance equipment, slope, and weather. Surface appearance cannot compensate for an unsuitable base or transition.

Detail the section and quantities

Show subgrade preparation, separator if designed, compacted base, bedding, surface thickness, joint material, edge restraint, drains, roots, and finished grade. Measure each layer by net route area and compacted depth; count units and cuts from a layout; measure edging and joints by length. Keep curves, landings, steps, ramps, drains, and tie-ins as explicit takeoff lines.

Test usability and maintainability

Build a representative sample where texture, joints, color, rolling, slip, glare, or drainage matter. Check the route in sun, shade, wet conditions, and at night with the planned lighting. Plan leaf and sediment removal, joint or infill care, edge repair, weed management, snow or heat response, and access for future utility work without destroying the whole path.

Frequently asked questions

Which surface is best for an accessible path?

The designed route must meet applicable requirements for width, slope, cross-slope, firmness, stability, slip resistance, changes in level, and transitions. Obtain qualified review.

Can stepping stones replace a continuous walkway?

Only if spacing, stability, surface, user needs, drainage, and applicable accessibility or code requirements allow it. Do not assume equivalence.

How do I estimate paver quantities?

Use a scaled pattern layout, exact unit dimensions, joints, borders, curves, cuts, stairs, and a documented breakage or waste basis—not area alone.
