Rio Stone field guide

Water-wise plant selection

Choose plants from verified site conditions, mature size, establishment needs, irrigation zones, and long-term care rather than appearance alone.

Project inspiration; materials shown are not represented as a specific Rio Stone product.

A useful material request starts with a clear measurement, a defined use, and honest expectations about what still needs confirmation.

Build a site profile

A label such as drought tolerant does not describe every site. Note morning and afternoon sun, reflected heat from walls or paving, wind, slope, soil drainage, irrigation water, frost pockets, elevation, existing roots, overhead lines, pets, and foot traffic. Photograph the area at different times and measure the real planting space above and below ground.

Verify the plant, not just the picture

Use the botanical name, cultivar, and current container or specimen size. Confirm mature height and width, growth habit, evergreen or deciduous behavior, flower and fruit, thorns, litter, roots, toxicity, invasiveness, wildlife value, cold and heat limits, and current condition. Nursery stock can vary, and a young plant's photograph does not show its eventual scale.

Plan establishment and hydrozones

Water-wise plants still need correct planting and establishment irrigation. Group species with compatible water and soil needs, then design emitters, schedule, inspection, mulch or mineral cover, and maintenance for each hydrozone. Keep root flare visible and avoid automatic schedules that ignore season, rainfall, soil moisture, or plant establishment stage. Follow qualified local horticultural guidance.

Order for the finished composition

Lay out mature plant circles on the plan, not only current pots. Count each botanical selection and acceptable substitute separately, identify specimen priorities, and request current photos when individual character matters. Confirm acclimation, transport, handling, planting timing, return limits, and whether the vehicle protects foliage and root balls. Reinspect living material at pickup or delivery.

Before requesting pricing

  • Record sun by season, heat reflection, wind, drainage, soil, irrigation, cold exposure, and available root space.
  • Verify botanical identity, mature dimensions, water needs after establishment, climate suitability, and known hazards.
  • Group plants with compatible irrigation needs and preserve clearance from structures, utilities, paths, and fire-sensitive areas.

Frequently asked questions

Does drought tolerant mean no irrigation?

No. Establishment and seasonal needs vary by plant, soil, exposure, climate, and health. Use verified species-specific guidance.

Can plants with different water needs share one valve?

That often prevents appropriate scheduling. Group compatible plants into hydrozones and have the irrigation design reviewed for the actual site.

May I choose by common name alone?

No. Common names can refer to multiple species or cultivars. Use the botanical identity and verify the exact nursery record.
