Rio Stone field guide

Flagstone, pavers, and retaining materials

Separate surface, wall, and structural systems before comparing stone appearance, dimensions, quantities, and installation components.

Retaining-wall inspiration; engineering and material requirements vary by site.

A useful material request starts with a clear measurement, a defined use, and honest expectations about what still needs confirmation.

Name the assembly before the color

Flagstone may be irregular or cut and installed dry-laid or mortared. Pavers are manufactured units whose system can include bedding, base, edge restraint, joints, drainage, and sometimes permeable layers. Retaining materials may be structural units, wall stone, veneer, or caps. Those categories are not interchangeable, even when photographs look similar.

Measure the correct unit

Paving is usually planned by net area plus documented cuts and waste; irregular stone may have an approximate coverage range tied to thickness and joint width. Wall units may be counted by face area, piece, linear foot, course, corner, or pallet. Measure caps, steps, curves, openings, corners, and transitions separately rather than hiding them in one square-foot total.

Verify support and water management

Subgrade, excavation, base material, compacted lift depth, bedding, mortar, reinforcement, geogrid, drains, outlets, flashing, waterproofing, and finished grade can control performance. Retaining, pool-adjacent, elevated, load-bearing, accessible, or public work may require engineering, permits, testing, and approved details. A product page never replaces those requirements.

Approve appearance and logistics

Review current-lot samples in the intended light, blend natural stone from multiple pallets when appropriate, and establish acceptable range before installation. Confirm pallet coverage and weight, corner availability, breakage basis, batch consistency, forklift access, protected staging, and installation sequence. Reserve replacement pieces only after identifying how they will be labeled and stored.

Before requesting pricing

  • Define whether the material is paving, veneer, freestanding wall, gravity retaining unit, cap, step, or accent.
  • Compare actual thickness, dimensional tolerance, surface texture, edge, corner pieces, coverage basis, and lot variation.
  • Coordinate base, drainage, joints, reinforcement, slope, code, and qualified installation before ordering finish material.

Frequently asked questions

Can wall stone be used as retaining block?

Not by name alone. The designed wall system must establish structural role, geometry, drainage, reinforcement, foundation, and permitted product.

Does pallet coverage guarantee my installed area?

No. Thickness, joint width, pattern, cuts, selection, breakage, and natural variation can change practical coverage. Confirm the stated basis.

Should natural stone be selected from photos?

Photos help narrow options but do not establish exact color, texture, thickness, or lot range. Inspect representative current material when appearance matters.
