Fire pits and features
Coordinate listed equipment, fuel, ventilation, ignition, controls, clearances, structure, drainage, decorative media, finishes, seating, and emergency access.
Before choosing
Turn the idea into useful details.
These are planning prompts, not engineering instructions or an installation guarantee.
- Choose the listed appliance or engineered system first; its instructions and local requirements control compatible materials and geometry.
- Resolve fuel supply, shutoff, ventilation, drainage, electrical, ignition, controls, clearances, wind, overheads, and supervision with qualified trades.
- Order only the media size, depth, coverage, finish, cap, enclosure, and accessories approved for the exact equipment.
Start with equipment and authority
Identify fuel type, listed burner or appliance, input, ignition, controls, shutoff, regulator, enclosure requirements, manufacturer, model, installation instructions, and applicable permit and inspection path. Determine who designs and installs gas, electrical, structure, and ventilation. A decorative-media catalog page cannot approve a burner, conversion, enclosure, or site configuration.
Lay out clearances and use zones
Mark buildings, roofs, eaves, shade structures, trees, fences, furniture, paths, pools, slopes, prevailing wind, combustible surfaces, children or pets, and emergency approach. Apply the exact equipment's clearances and local requirements to seating and circulation, not a generic diagram. Consider flame, heat, sparks, reflected heat, smoke, trip hazards, and how the feature is supervised and shut down.
Build the enclosure and drainage correctly
Foundation, noncombustible construction, ventilation openings, burner support, pan, drainage, water exclusion, access panels, control clearance, gas routing, electrical separation, and finish attachment must follow approved details. Do not block required air openings with stone, mortar, media, or landscaping. Outdoor water can damage equipment or create unsafe operation if the system cannot drain and dry as designed.
Select and commission approved media
Use only media type, particle size, quantity, depth, placement, and burner coverage allowed by the exact manufacturer. Ordinary rock can trap moisture, crack, spall, or obstruct flame and controls. Keep media out of ignition and drainage components as directed. A qualified party should leak-test, inspect, commission, demonstrate operation and shutdown, and document approved maintenance and replacement parts.
Frequently asked questions
Can landscape glass be used as fire glass?
No unless the exact product is approved for the listed fire equipment and installation. Decorative landscape glass is not automatically heat-rated media.
Can river rock cover a burner?
Only if the equipment manufacturer explicitly permits the exact media, sizing, placement, and depth. Unapproved stone can fail dangerously.
Does Rio install or certify the fuel system?
Do not infer that from material supply. Confirm scope and use properly licensed or qualified trades, permits, inspections, and manufacturer commissioning where required.
