Criteria that change the selection

Do not compare by name or photograph alone. Record each of these variables so the yard can separate genuinely useful alternatives.

• Compare intended planting use, texture, screened size, organic content, drainage, water holding, pH, salinity, and current analysis.
• Distinguish native soil, topsoil, planting mix, raised-bed mix, fill, compost blend, and container media.
• Match trees, shrubs, vegetables, turf, planters, grading, or backfill to the designed soil profile and drainage.

Terminology and variants

Garden soil and topsoil are not regulated universal recipes; composition, density, screened size, organic matter, and intended use vary by supplier and lot.

When requesting a quote, use the full product name, variant, size or finish, and the unit shown on the record. One informal word can cover materials that behave differently.

Measurement and quantity

Measure net area by loose or compacted depth as appropriate, account for settlement deliberately, and calculate raised beds from their internal dimensions.

Keep areas, layers, depths, cuts, compaction, and waste separate. Convert to tons only when verified density exists for the exact product and condition; otherwise keep the volume and ask for help.

Choose a clean accessible pile site, protect drains and finished surfaces, confirm moisture and load weight, prevent contamination, and plan prompt placement.
