Pond and water-feature planning
Plan basin volume, circulation, filtration, liner, plumbing, power, stone, safety, water loss, and service access as one maintainable system.
A useful material request starts with a clear measurement, a defined use, and honest expectations about what still needs confirmation.
Map volume and water movement
For a simple rectangular basin, approximate gallons equal length ft × width ft × average depth ft × 7.48. Irregular shelves, rock displacement, reservoirs, plumbing, and operating drawdown change actual water volume. Record static and operating water levels, desired flow effect, elevation rise, pipe length, fittings, and return points before selecting equipment.
Select components as a matched system
Pump curves relate flow to total dynamic head, not just a nominal gallons-per-hour label. Pipe diameter, elevation, friction, fittings, filter resistance, spillway width, and desired sound affect the operating point. Intake, skimmer, biological and mechanical filtration, aeration, ultraviolet equipment, check valves, and controls must be compatible with the design and service plan.
Detail containment and edges
Liner and underlayment sizing depends on finished excavation, depth, shelves, overlaps, seams, penetrations, stream geometry, and anchoring—not only water surface dimensions. Plan stable rock support, capillary breaks, splash recovery, overflow, drainage away from structures, and access to components. Heavy stone, tall features, and retaining edges may require structural review and lifting equipment.
Provide safe power and maintenance
Use qualified electrical work and listed components appropriate to wet locations, with required protection, grounding, disconnects, cable routing, and accessible controls. Plan leaf and sediment removal, filter cleaning, pump access, water treatment, make-up water, winter or heat procedures, and leak diagnosis. Keep product warranties and operating limits tied to the exact installed components.
Before requesting pricing
- Draw the water path and record basin dimensions, elevations, stream length, falls, pipe route, splash zone, and service access.
- Match pump, filtration, plumbing, intake, return, lighting, and treatment components using current manufacturer guidance.
- Keep qualified electrical, structural, child-safety, waterproofing, excavation, and code decisions outside a product-only estimate.
Frequently asked questions
Can pond volume choose the pump by itself?
No. Target circulation, elevation, friction, pipe, fittings, filtration, spillway, and operating range determine the required pump curve.
Is liner size the same as pond footprint?
No. Depth, shelves, side slopes, stream, overlaps, anchoring, penetrations, and installation allowance must be included using the chosen system's method.
Can any rock be placed in the water?
Do not assume so. Evaluate stability, sharp edges, chemistry, staining, freeze or heat exposure, handling, and compatibility with liner, fish, and treatment.
