Plan by project
Lawns, pet areas, and putting greens
Separate landscape lawn, pet, play, and putting performance, then design base, drainage, pad, turf, seams, infill, edges, cleaning, and heat management.
Before choosing
Turn the idea into useful details.
These are planning prompts, not engineering instructions or an installation guarantee.
- Define users, traffic, pets, play, fall criteria, ball speed, contours, accessibility, drainage, heat, sanitation, and maintenance.
- Create a roll, grain, seam, cut, perimeter, transition, drainage, pad, and infill plan for the exact system.
- Verify compatible adhesives, fasteners, infill, cleaners, deodorizers, grooming, warranties, and disposal before ordering.
Write a use-specific brief
A front lawn, dog run, daycare play zone, bocce edge, multipurpose yard, and putting green are different surfaces. Record users and frequency, pet size and number, urine and wash water, toys and fall exposure, wheel use, desired ball response, shade, reflected heat, trees, irrigation overspray, and cleaning resources. Select performance before pile appearance.
Design base, drainage, and safety
Survey soil, grade, outlets, low points, roots, utilities, doors, walls, and adjacent hardscape. Detail excavation, separator, compacted base, drainage, shock pad if required, slope, edge restraint, transitions, and access to cleanouts. Pet systems need rapid, maintainable drainage and sanitation; play systems may require tested impact performance; putting greens need specialized contours and cups.
Lay out turf and accessories
Use actual roll width and grain direction to place fields and seams, avoiding visually or mechanically sensitive locations where practical. Measure net area, full-roll cuts, seam length, perimeter, transitions, pad, base volume, drainage, fastener pattern, and infill rate separately. Pair seam tape, adhesive, nails or staples, edging, pad, drainage panels, and infill only when compatible with the selected turf.
Plan heat, hygiene, and repair
Evaluate surface temperature, reflected sunlight, shade, footwear, pet paws, watering or cooling limits, and nearby glass. Establish approved waste removal, rinsing, cleaner or enzyme use, drainage inspection, infill grooming and replenishment, seam and edge repair, odor response, weed control, and replacement access. Test products on a small area and protect runoff, plants, people, and animals.
Frequently asked questions
Is pet turf a different product or just different infill?
It can involve turf backing, drainage, base, seams, edges, infill, sanitation, and maintenance together. Compare the entire documented system.
Can a putting green use ordinary landscape base?
Do not assume so. Contour stability, drainage, ball response, cups, fringe, compaction, and tolerances require a putting-specific design.
Does artificial turf stay cool?
No universal product stays cool in every exposure. Measure site heat and compare yarn, color, infill, shade, reflection, cooling, and user limits.
