Ponds and water features
Coordinate excavation, structure, liner, reservoir, circulation, filtration, plumbing, power, stone, overflow, safety, water quality, and service access.
Before choosing
Turn the idea into useful details.
These are planning prompts, not engineering instructions or an installation guarantee.
- Draw basin, shelves, streams, falls, reservoir, elevations, pipe, equipment, power, overflow, splash, make-up water, and maintenance route.
- Use matched manufacturer or designed components and pump curves for the required flow at actual dynamic head.
- Resolve wet-location electrical, structural, excavation, child and animal safety, water treatment, and code with qualified parties.
Define the experience and operating states
Decide whether the feature is fish pond, planted pond, pondless waterfall, fountain, formal basin, stream, or decorative spill. Record target sound and flow, viewing angles, water depth, static and operating levels, reservoir drawdown, wind, evaporation, splash recovery, winter or heat behavior, and visibility. Identify what happens when power stops, filters clog, or rainfall exceeds normal operation.
Design the water and equipment path
Estimate basin volume from measured geometry, then size circulation, intake, skimming, mechanical and biological filtration, aeration, ultraviolet treatment if used, plumbing, valves, returns, autofill, overflow, and drains as one system. Pump selection must use total dynamic head including elevation and friction. Place components where they can be isolated, cleaned, removed, and safely powered.
Build containment and stone support
Survey excavation, soil, groundwater, adjacent structures, slopes, roots, utilities, and equipment access. Detail underlayment, liner or structural waterproofing, seams, penetrations, edge anchoring, capillary breaks, stream overlap, overflow, backfill, stable rock pads, and protection from sharp or concentrated loads. Tall or heavy features may require engineered foundations, anchors, and lifting plans.
Plan commissioning and care
Test plumbing and containment before concealing work, flush debris, verify operating levels and overflow, confirm pump current and flow against instructions, and observe splash and drainage. Establish water testing and treatment appropriate to fish or plants, filter and intake cleaning, debris removal, make-up water, leak diagnosis, lighting service, seasonal procedures, and safe access. Record every installed model and replacement part.
Frequently asked questions
How do I estimate pond gallons?
For a simple rectangle, length ft × width ft × average depth ft × 7.48 estimates geometric gallons; shelves, rock, reservoirs, and operating levels change actual volume.
Can pump size be chosen from pond gallons alone?
No. Required turnover or display flow, elevation, friction, pipe, fittings, filter, spillway, and operating range determine the pump curve.
Is a contextual project photo an installation detail?
No. It illustrates an idea. Use current manufacturer documents, project design, code, and qualified trades for the actual assembly.
